Acne rosacea is a subset of rosacea which is a mild to severe skin condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Acne rosacea combines the redness and facial flushing of rosacea with symptoms of acne. This can include lesions, closed and open comedomes, papules and pustules.
Acne rosacea can cause scaring and acne symptoms well into adulthood. Understandably, people suffering from acne rosacea also notice their self esteem is lowered due to the severity of their skin condition.
Acne rosacea sufferers generally have facial redness, flushing and sometimes visible blood vessels. It is more common in adults with fair skin, however can affect other people too. Severe acne rosacea will also involve the eyes (red, swollen and itchy) and the nose which can become enlarged in rare instances.
Alcohol, spicy and hot foods can cause rosacea and acne flare ups. Transitions from cold to warm environments are also a major factor. These are however not the cause of acne rosacea. Currently there is no known cause or treatment.
Acne rosacea sufferers are often prescribed acne medication however this does not treat the underlying rosacea condition. Laser treatment can be undertaken to assist in fading acne scars and visible blood vessels.
Other drugs which may help acne rosacea include Metrogel which is a topical antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment. The acne treatment Retin A may also be prescribed in severe circumstances.
Acne rosacea is a debilitating illness which causes great stress and anxiety for people. It is hoped that there will one day be a cure for this widespread condition.
